"Der Mensch kann tun was er will; er kann aber nicht wollen was er will.”
Man can do what he wills but he cannot will what he wills." ~ Schopenhauer
Free will does not exist and that is why ‘will power’ in a healing process is so counterproductive and prone to disappointment and a deep sense of failure. I cannot ‘will’ to not drink excessively. Even if I were to be able to will to do so, my self-loathing would simply find another outlet. The only free will I can effectively employ is the will to change the one doing the willing. I have to choose to transform the willing mechanism in my mind: my core beliefs.
